Marimo Balls are considered good luck charms in Japan, and since they have been known to live up to 200 years or more, they are often kept as family heirlooms. They are thought to symbolize the close ties between family members or very close friends, and are often passed on to children and grandchildren or nieces and nephews. At the time that future generations marimo receive the ball, they are larger in size and will continue to grow with each generation.
